Beryl Produces Over 2 Million Power Outages in Houston, TX: How to Survive without Power

I am a survivor of the Tropical Storm Beryl and the subsequent power outage which resulted in total darkness for just shy of a week.  Some residents are still in the dark.

On the day of the storm Beryl, Center Point Energy reported over 2 Million Houston residents were without power.  And you can believe with 100-degree temperatures it was almost unbearable heat and very dark without lights in the entire city.

There was no way to cool off with ceiling fans or air conditioning nor was there any way to preserve food in the refrig and freezer because we could not find any ice at local gas stations.  thankfully we had filled our tank with gas before the storm because there were long lines around the gas stations all over the city. Our source of light was the sun and at night candlelight.

In fact, the whole region was in the dark, and boy was it hot.  We tried to sleep for 2 nights without A/C, which was nearly impossible.  However, we preserved by praying and hoping that our lights and power would return sometime during the night.

However, that did not happen so we found a local motel about 10 minutes from home and we were relieved they had 1 non-smoking room vacancy.  When we entered the room the A/C was at full blast. And the room felt like ice. We were ecstatic, to say the least.  One-hundred-degree temps wear you down quickly in Texas. The sun and heat are unrelenting.

Lessons: What you need to survive Houston's power outages floods, tropical storms, and hurricanes.

1. Purchase a Solar Power Supply with Solar Panels in case of power outages. The Solar Power source will power the refrigerator, hot pot, air conditioner, and a few lights as needed.

Sidenote: It is unnecessary to power everything electrical in the home during a power outage. One room with blankets and pillows for everyone is sufficient.

2. Have a backpack or gym bag pre-packed with your essential items. The List includes:

You can add products to the list above depending on your needs.

Several changes of clean clothing can also be pre-packed for each family member if you leave your home and seek hotel or motel accommodation.

Patience and kindness go a long way in making your wait for power to be restored.  And I suggest games like Uno and books for both the adults & children to keep them calm and occupied.

Our lives have been impacted by the memory of Hurricane Beryl.  We are happy
we have learned what we need in the future when power outages are imminent due to storms and flooding.
